How to Prepare Your Home and Family for an Emergency: A Simple Guide for Busy Moms

When you think about emergency preparedness, it can feel a little overwhelming. There are supplies to gather, important documents to organize, family plans to make, and so many things to think about.

And if you're already juggling kids, work, meals, laundry, and everything else that comes with running a household, adding one more thing to your to-do list probably isn't very appealing!

But here's the thing: being organized before an emergency happens can make a stressful situation a little easier to manage.

You don't have to prepare for everything in one afternoon, and you don't need to spend a fortune buying supplies. The goal is to have some basic necessities ready, know what your family should do, and keep important information somewhere you can find it when you need it.

A little preparation now can save you time and frustration later.

Here are a few simple ways to get your home and family better prepared.

1. Put Together an Emergency Supply Kit

One of the first things to do is gather basic supplies your family might need if you lose power, need to leave home quickly, or can't get to the store for a few days.

Instead of trying to remember everything, start by making a list and gathering items a little at a time.

Here are some essentials to consider:

  • Bottled water or stored drinking water

  • Nonperishable food your family will actually eat

  • Manual can opener

  • Snacks that are easy to store and transport

  • Special food or formula needed by family members

  • Flashlights or headlamps

  • Extra batteries

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio

  • Portable phone chargers or power banks

  • Charging cables

  • First aid kit

  • Prescription medications and a plan for keeping them available

  • Basic personal care items

  • Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes

  • Necessary medical supplies

  • Toilet paper and hygiene products

  • Work gloves

  • Basic tools

  • Whistle

  • Cash in small bills

  • Local maps

  • Garbage bags

  • Pet food and pet supplies

My tip: Don't feel like you have to buy everything at once. Start with what you already have at home, make a list of what's missing, and add a few things each time you shop.

I've also put together an Amazon list of emergency preparedness essentials to make it easier to find some of these items in one place.

2. Make a Simple Family Emergency Plan

Having supplies is important, but your family should also know what to do if an emergency happens.

It's easy to assume everyone will know what to do in the moment, but stressful situations can make it difficult to think clearly. Having a plan written down gives everyone something to refer to.

Start by talking through a few basic questions:

  • Where will we meet if we can't get back home?

  • Where should we go if we need to evacuate?

  • Who should we contact if family members get separated?

  • Where are our emergency supplies kept?

  • How will we communicate if phone service is limited?

  • What do we need to do for our pets?

Choose an out-of-area contact who family members can check in with if local communication becomes difficult. Make sure everyone knows how to reach that person.

It's also helpful to write down important phone numbers. Even though most of us rely on our phones for everything, having a printed list can be useful if your phone battery dies or you can't access your contacts.

If you have children, explain the plan in a way that's appropriate for their ages. They don't need to know every possible emergency scenario, but they should know who to contact, where to go, and what to do if you become separated.

3. Get Your Important Documents Organized

This is one area I think is especially important to prepare ahead of time.

Imagine needing to evacuate your home quickly or dealing with an unexpected situation and suddenly needing your insurance information, medical details, or important family documents.

Would you know exactly where everything is?

Or would you be searching through drawers, file folders, email accounts, and piles of paperwork trying to find what you need?

Getting these documents organized ahead of time can make a big difference.

Consider gathering information related to:

Home and Property

  • Home address and important property information

  • Homeowners or renters insurance

  • Mortgage or rental information

  • Utility company contact information

  • Photos or records of valuable belongings

Insurance and Financial Information

  • Health insurance information

  • Auto insurance information

  • Banking and financial institution contact details

  • Important account information

  • Copies of relevant financial records

Family and Medical Information

  • Emergency contacts

  • Important family phone numbers

  • Medical conditions and allergies

  • Current medications and dosages

  • Doctors and pharmacy contact information

  • Health care provider information

Legal and Personal Documents

  • Identification information

  • Birth and marriage certificates

  • Passports

  • Wills and other important legal documents

  • Relevant custody or guardianship information

Pets

  • Veterinary contact information

  • Vaccination records

  • Medication details

  • Microchip information

  • Photos of your pets

4. Create an Emergency Binder

Once you've gathered your important information, you'll want a simple way to keep it organized.

This is where an emergency binder can be so helpful!

An emergency binder gives you one place to keep the information your family may need during an unexpected situation. Instead of trying to remember which drawer or folder holds everything, you have a designated place to look.

You can customize it to fit your household. Every family is different, so include the information that would be most useful to yours.

I created an Emergency Binder to help make this process easier. It gives you a place to organize important household, family, pet, and other essential information so you're not starting from scratch.

You can print the pages, fill them in, and keep everything together in one organized place.

5. Keep Your Emergency Supplies Organized and Easy to Find

Once you've gathered your supplies, don't forget to decide where everything will live.

You don't want to have an emergency kit scattered throughout the house with no one knowing where anything is!

Choose a designated storage area that's easy for family members to access. Use sturdy bins or bags to group similar supplies together.

For example:

  • Food and water: Store together in a designated area.

  • First aid and health supplies: Keep in a clearly labeled container.

  • Lighting and power: Group flashlights, batteries, and chargers.

  • Important documents: Keep your emergency binder and document copies in a secure, accessible location.

  • Pet supplies: Keep essential pet items together.

Labeling your containers makes it easier to find what you need without digging through everything.

Remember to check your supplies periodically. Replace expired food, review medications, check batteries, recharge power banks, and update contact information when something changes.

A simple reminder on your calendar can help you stay on top of it.

Start Small and Build Your Plan Over Time

If you've read through this list and feel a little overwhelmed, take a breath.

You do not need to get everything done today.

The best way to approach emergency preparedness is to break it into smaller tasks. Even setting aside 15 or 20 minutes at a time can help you make progress.

A Little Preparation Can Make a Big Difference

We can't predict every emergency or control everything that happens, but we can take steps to help our families feel more prepared.

Start with one small step today. Your future self will be glad you did!
